Home Saint Viator Homepage Shop McKenna Marketplace All News Stories Home Saint Viator Homepage Shop McKenna Marketplace All News Stories Tyler Haisman Earns Eagle Scout Rank By Saint Viator On September 18, 2019 In Athletics , Student Accomplishments Junior Tyler Haisman has attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest possible achievement for a member of the Boy Scouts of America. The award was presented by members of BSA Troop 166 at a Court of Honor, held on September 8, at Saint Viator. For his Eagle Project, Haisman chose to build a Veterans Memorial Plaza located outside of the school near two athletic fields. His project consisted of installing brick pavers and a memorial plaque around three existing flagpoles. The three flags that fly there are the U.S. flag, the State of Illinois flag and the Saint Viator flag. It is important to note that the three existing flagpoles are the result of another Troop 166 Eagle Scout Project completed by Matt Beiersdorf in August of 2016. Beiersdorf saw the need for the flags to be properly represented at school sporting events. Haisman, who served as a volunteer worker on Beiersdorf’s project, came up with the idea to expand up on the area and make it a designated Veteran’s Memorial Plaza. He coordinated with Landscape Construction Corporation (LCC) to complete the project. LCC generously donated the materials and some of the labor for the project. Haisman then ordered a bronze plaque that says, “Dedicated to the men and women who served in the Armed Forces.” Haisman said he feels it is important to honor Veterans because they give so much to our country. His family has a history of military service, and so the sacrifice is real. “I really wanted to give the Saint Viator Community a central location to honor and celebrate those who have served our country,” he said. As Haisman was installing the bronze plaque at the site, a man, who is a father of a Saint Viator student and 23-year military veteran, thanked him for installing the plaza honoring veterans. Haisman hopes many more veterans will feel respected and appreciated as they visit the site. Upon being awarded the Eagle Scout rank, Haisman has successfully earned 33 merit badges, inducted into the Order of the Arrow, and participated in countless weekend camping trips, including a high-adventure trip to North Manatou Island in Michigan. Haisman is an active member of St. James Parish in Arlington Heights. He is considering a career in engineering or aviation. Less than four percent of Scouts attain the rank of Eagle, and those who do are expected to set an example for other Scouts and to become the leaders in life that they have demonstrated themselves to be in Scouting. National Merit Commended Scholars Announced By Saint Viator On September 18, 2019 In Student Accomplishments Megan Bosshart Five more Saint Viator High School seniors received good news this month from the National Merit Corporation. Michal Bohuslaw-Podhorecki, Megan Bosshart, Andrew Bremner, David Hegberg, and Benjamin Hurtado, all learned they were named commended scholars in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Andrew Bremner As National Merit commended scholars, they placed among the top scorers of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition when they took the PSAT as sophomores in 2018 or the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. David Hegberg “Our National Merit Scholarship commended students have demonstrated remarkable academic potential and we are proud of their accomplishments,” says Principal Karen Love. “Their futures are very bright with a strong foundation of a Saint Viator education.” Benjamin Hurtado While commended scholars do not qualify to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, they bring this added distinction to their college applications. “We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities,” a spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship Program said, “and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic excellence.” Michal Podhorecki National Merit Semifinalists Announced By Saint Viator On September 16, 2019 In Saint Viator News , Student Accomplishments Daniel Fecko ’20 Saint Viator High School learned Wednesday that two seniors had been named semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Daniel Fecko and He Bai joined this elite group based on their preliminary SAT scores taken when they were juniors. They emerged from a pool of 1.5 million juniors from 21,000 high schools who took the PSAT that year, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. He Bai ’20 Officials with the National Merit Scholarship Program said this year’s semi-finalist pool represents the highest scoring entrants in each state or less than one percent of high school seniors. These students now will have a chance to advance to the finalist level, and continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. National Merit Scholarship officials say 90 percent of semifinalists advance to become finalists. They must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Cross Country Invitational Draws Record Number of Teams By Saint Viator On August 22, 2019 In Athletics , Saint Viator News , Student Accomplishments Saint Viator High School’s cross-country invitational, designed to give young runners a jumpstart on their season, continues to grow. Now in its fourth year, this year’s invite drew its most teams ever, 19, and more than 450 runners. They ranged in age from fourth through eighth grade, but kindergartners also got in the fun, running the 50-yard dash as well as first through third graders running a 200-meter race. Teams included: Frassati Academy in Wauconda, Holy Family Academy in Inverness, Immanuel Lutheran, St. Thomas of Villanova and St. Theresa, all in Palatine; Our Lady of the Wayside and St. James in Arlington Heights; St. Alphonsus in Prospect Heights, St. Benedict Preparatory School, St. Juliana and Queen of All Saints, all in Chicago; St. Raymond and St. Emily in Mount Prospect; St. Francis de Sales in Lake Zurich, St. Gilbert in Grayslake, St. Hubert in Hoffman Estates, St. Mary in Buffalo Grove, St. Patrick in Wadsworth, and St. Paul of the Cross in Park Ridge. “It’s one of the only high school invitationals that we know about,” says Christine Bremner, race director and enrollment director at Saint Viator. “We think that’s the reason we get schools from a wide geographic area.” She adds that young runners get to compete against schools outside their conference, and see Saint Viator’s expansive campus. Members of Saint Viator’s girls’ and boys’ cross country teams helped run the event and led the younger runners through their courses. Junior varsity boys and girls ran a one-mile course, while varsity runners ran a two-mile course. All racers were clocked by a professional timing company, It’s Race Time, Inc., and were able see their results online . “It is such a great feeling watching those kids cross the finish line,” Bremner adds. “I love seeing those exhausted, determined, proud, happy faces crossing the finish line. What a great way to build confidence and self-esteem for the new school year.” In all, 100 individual awards were handed out, with the top 25 finishers among JV girls, JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys all receiving medals. The Saint Viator traveling cup went to the top girls’ and boys’ varsity teams, or St. Benedict Prep for girls’ varsity and St. Mary in Buffalo Grove for boys’ varsity. Top placing teams in each division included: Girls JV 1st Place – St. Benedict Prep 2nd Place – Saint James 3rd...
